The Star Chronicles

Yes, first grade girls were the worst. Even with a limited vocabulary, they were able to form words that ripped through my skin and into my heart. They called me things such as "cross-eyed brownie", my last name was Brown, and "chicken legs". Now that I'm older they don't sound so bad, but the thought of those words being relentlessly chorused through the classroom still makes me shudder. I wasn't feeling very star-like at all. Still, I held my own and was able to shoot back some pretty good comebacks like "fat cow" to the chubby girls and "needle neck" to the overly skinny girls. Soon, the teasing wore off and we became one big happy first grade girl clique, of which I was destined to be the leader.
